Thuria and Beyond
Carved out of Hyborian territory around 500 YT, Irissen is a cold, inhospitable realm whose existence is little known among the people of the Thurian kingdoms to the south. Consisting of rugged, sparsely populated land in the north-east of Hyboria proper, Irrisen is the domain of the Daughters of Baba Yaga.
Irrisen is, in some ways, run by quite a conventional monarchy. There is only one ruler whose word is absolute and whose power is unassailable. However, Irrisen’s is not a hereditary monarchy. Instead, the monarch is chosen by the ancient witch Baba Yaga who originally established Irrisen on a whim around 500 YT. Every century, she returns from her endless wanderings to place a new daughter in charge of Irrisen. Usually, the outgoing Queen leaves with Baba Yaga to accompany the ancient crone on continued journeys around and beyond the earth. If the outgoing ruler has borne children, these grandchildren of Baba Yaga usually remain in Irrisen, a lasting legacy of the previous Queen and, usually, a thorn in the side of the newly-appointed ruler. The disharmony caused by squabbles between the new Queen and the disgruntled progeny of the previous Queen is amusing for Baba Yaga, appealing to her taste of discord and confusion.
