Thuria and Beyond
Basic details as per Monster Manual 2. These large, sentient insects are native to the south-eastern part of the Kharamun Desert. Although intelligent, Thri-Kreen lack the desire to form the large communities needed to enable the development of skills such as metalworking and tool making. This apparent disadvantage, however, is mitigated by a peculiar symbiotic relationship developed with some of the nomadic human Joktani tribe. Joktan mystics are able to communicate with (and summon) Thri-Keen visitors, who are welcomed and paid great respect in Joktani camps. The weapons and equipment used by Thri-Kreen hunters are fashioned for them by Joktani craftsmen. Thri-Kreen visitors to the camps are also offered live animals and human captives on which to feast. In exchange for these gifts, the Thri-Kreen offer three benefits to their Joktani allies.
Firstly, the Thri-Kreen never harm the Joktani, being intelligent enough to recognise their allies’ unique style of dress, jewellery and mode of speech. Secondly, Thri-Kreen warriors will sometimes join the tribesmen’s raids on caravans crossing Joktani territory, with the spoils divided such that the insect contingent receive camels and human captives for eating. Finally, the Thri-Kreen, whose own need for water is very modest, are adept at discovering subterranean sources of water when creating their burrows. The Thri-Kreen, then, often lead Joktani bands to new sources of water and assist with the digging of wells.
